Apprentice to British trainer Dean Ivory, Sophie Ralston’s love of racing came from a natural passion for horses rather than a sporting background. She began riding at the age of 11, working in a yard in return for lessons where her ambition to become a professional jockey was formed.
A regular on the pony racing circuit, Ralston joined the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE) in Ireland after secondary school before securing a position at Pat Phelan’s Epsom yard where she spent seven years.
In 2017 Ralston was nominated by RACE to represent Ireland in the H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship where she competed in the German qualifier earning a place in the Abu Dhabi final which she was forced to miss through injury.
A successful partnership with the Tony Carroll-trained Oeil De Tigre, who she partnered to victory in three consecutive starts at Goodwood last year, attracted public and media attention helping to further her international career which has recently included race riding in Cyprus and at the National Day races in Stockholm earlier this month.
